On Wednesday evening, Nascar dropped the hammer issuing a massive penalty to Chase Briscoe and the no. 19 team for an illegal modification. Briscoe was docked 100 points, 10 playoff points, and the no. 19 team was docked 100 owners points and 10 owners playoff points. Briscoe’s crew chief James Small was suspended four races and Joe Gibbs Racing was fined $100,000 for this infraction. This was discovered after his car was randomly selected(along with Austin Cindric’s no. 2 car) to be taken back to Nascar’s R&D Center for a post race teardown.

The team made modifications to the spoiler base of the Daytona 500 pole sitting car according to Fox Sports Bob Pockrass.

This unfortunately is Chase Briscoe’s second time being handed a massive penalty by Nascar. In 2023 he was handed a 120 driver point and a 25 playoff point penalty for having a counterfeit engine panel.

Chase Briscoe now sits at -67 points in the Nascar standings and is -118 on the playoff cutline. This puts him in 45th in the standings and almost in a must win scenario after just one race. That seems like a crazy comment to make with him being in a Joe Gibbs car, but being that far back is almost insurmountable. The good news for Briscoe is, there are 25 races to go to get a win or even mount a massive comeback to point his way into the playoffs. He has a great team and great equipment to get a win and that will be his path into the playoffs.

Joe Gibbs Racing announced they will appeal the penalty.
