2023 Record: 9-4 (4-4)

AP Ranking: 15

Head Coach: Josh Huepel

Volunteer fans expect to be in the playoffs. Just this week, I heard the expectation is 10-2 from a Tennessee fan. There is a path where they can have great success this year and Josh Huepel has given fans no reason to doubt him after his 2022 season, but I don’t think they’re quite at a ten win caliber team.

Nico Iamaleava took over at quarterback and looked great in the Citrus Bowl win. He is still inexperienced, but that is not the case for the rest of the offense. Squirrel White and Bru McCoy return to lead the receiving corps and the offensive line is not a concern, if anything, it is their greatest strength. Huepel will have this offense running fast as always and long term, Nico is the perfect fit. My biggest concern is what does it look like in his first year as a twelve game starter.

Keenan Pili, linebacker, is the type of player you want leading your defense. He was injured last season, but returns this year as the veteran leader for that side of the ball. It’s a lot of new faces for the Vols this year on defense, but their identity is getting after the quarterback. They ranked eighth in sacks a season ago and James Pearce Jr. is back to help lead their pass rush.

I have no reason to doubt Tennessee and I see the upside, but there will be learning curves with a new quarterback. The defense will also need to click quickly if they are to overcome some learning pains on the offensive side of the ball. Tennessee has one of the tougher Week 2 matchups against #24 NC State on the road. That will be the ultimate test and will either put them in a driver’s seat for a playoff spot or help Volunteer fans re-adjust their expectations.

Record Prediction: 8-4
