South Carolina Loses Star WR to Transfer Portal

South Carolina fans suffered a gut punch this morning when TheBigSpur.com (247 Sports) reported that Antwane “Juice” Wells intends to enter the Transfer Portal. South Carolina received news earlier this week about 3 other players entering the portal, but none created the same sense of loss as this one.

Coming from JMU, “Juice” Wells was the prized find of the 2022 Transfer Class. In his first season with the Gamecocks, he posted 928 yards and 6 touchdowns, while becoming a favorite target for Spencer Rattler. He elected to come back for a second season, despite receiving Day 2 draft grades, to run it back with Rattler. Coming into their season, he was widely considered a Top 3 receiver in the SEC; however, South Carolina fans were not able to experience the anticipated breakout. Wells only appeared in 2 games and posted 3 catches during the entire season. He was sidelined with a foot injury that the fan base is beginning to question now.

It’s no secret that South Carolina’s NIL is not the strongest in the country. There are going to be situations where players receive more money elsewhere. I am never going to blame a kid for jumping on an opportunity, but it’s what Juice posted last week that is making Gamecock fans scratch their heads.

Not to mention, his father had this to say on Facebook dating back to November 17th:

Not to read too far into this one, but is it possible his father only mentioned the SEC and not South Carolina on purpose? That’s where my mind originally went. It’ll be interesting to see where he lands, but if it’s in the SEC, this sticks out to me as an offer they knew was on the table.

You want to take somebody’s word when they give it. So when Juice posted his comment before the Clemson game, I want to believe he was speaking the truth, but the situation is increasingly blurry.

This is just yet another example of what is wrong with the Transfer portal. You have a player that you brought in from the portal, developed, paid through NIL (Reportedly ~ $1 Million), rehabbed through injury, and now they are able to walk away at the first larger offer they find. I understand why Gamecock fans feel slighted – so much was invested to help Wells stay here and continue to develop. Something doesn’t feel entirely truthful/transparent here. We can speculate all we want, but at the end of the day, Wells received a larger offer elsewhere and decided to enter the portal.

South Carolina’s top returning receivers are now Nyck Harbor (Former 5 Star) and O’Mega Blake. The two combined for 31 catches for 445 yards in 2023. They’ll surely be looking to the portal to find help for assumed starter, Lanorris Sellers. A couple names to watch out for: Kris Mitchell (FIU), Winston Wright (FSU), Da’Shawn Brown (Alabama A&M), Justin Olson (Middle Tennessee), James Burns (UCONN) and Chris Toudle (NC State).
